Licensing Law - Personal Licences
A personal Licence allows a person to sell alcohol or authorise the sale of alcohol. All sales must be authorised in accordance with the terms set out in the premises licence. A personal licence holder can authorise the sale of alcohol in any premises (England and Wales) that holds a premises licence.
A personal licence is individual to the person, therefore it is not a requirement to have a premises licence beforehand, in fact a personal licence holder does not even require to be working in a licensed premises.
It is the individual’s responsibility to ensure that the relevant authority has up to date details i.e. licensee address, where they work.
A personal licence is valid for ten years and can be renewed for further periods of ten years thereafter. The application for a personal licence must be made to the local authority where the person lives not where they intend to work.
